2005 National ARTS Program Lubbock
Seventy-eight works
from city employees, retirees, or their family members were on display
through December 29, 2005, at the Garden & Arts Center for Lubbock’s 16th
annual National Arts Program Exhibition and Competition. The purpose of
the National Arts Program is to showcase undiscovered art indigenous to
the Untied States and to help foster creativity. Co-sponsored by the
National Arts Program and the City of Lubbock’s Municipal Garden and
Arts Center, the program provides professional and non-professional
artists with a rare opportunity to exhibit their works publicly. Cash
awards and continuing art education scholarships are awarded to
participants for their original contributions in the field of fine arts.
Some works are also for sale.
The juror of this year’s exhibit is Ken
Dixon. Ken is an active mixed-media artist who recently achieved the
status of Emeritus Professor of Painting from Texas Tech University
after many years of service. He is best known for his large
puzzle-piece works dealing with concepts of order and disorder. He
states, “I considered a number of factors beyond choosing the works
most visually interesting to me. I attempted to represent a range of
visual approaches to art-making from representational imagery to work
which was very abstract in its thought and look.”
